About the Department
Health informatics leads its professionals and researchers to analyze, manage, and interpret health data, information, and knowledge through information technology and computational tools, bringing together the worlds of health and technology. The department is a dynamically growing field combining advances in multiple disciplines focusing on spanning medicine, health care and policy, computer science, data science, and artificial intelligence.
In Mattu University under the Colleges of Health Science, the Health Informatics department plays a crucial role in achieving strategic plans of both Mattu University and or Health Science College. Of this, the department has been providing effective teaching-learning activities that are aimed at producing qualified health informaticians professionals that will benefit the country’s health information system plan and Ethiopian electronic health strategy. Since its establishment (2015 G.C) as a BSc in Health Informatics bachelor, the department has graduated 5(Five) batches of health informatics graduates including a summer program. A total of more than 203 BSc students were graduated from this department and all of them were employed at different institutions over the past five years. Since then, these graduates have served the country as academic instructors, college teachers, zonal/woreda health offices, and public health institutions. In doing so, the department is very dedicated to serving the country by contributing to the country’s federal Ministry of Health information revolution agenda and digitalization/electronization of the healthcare system called Digital Health Systems. Currently, the department is teaching over 196 BSc students in post-basic, summer, and regular programs.
The Department of Health Informatics offers courses in both classrooms and computer laboratories under the College of Health Science. Over 15 academic staff and two computer laboratory technicians were serving the department. The Department has established two computer laboratories, one SMART ROOM computer laboratory and one normal computer room were available now for the normal teaching-learning process.

- Produce competent Health Informatics professionals who are able to develop, manage, and lead Health information management systems by ensuring and offering quality education.
- Produce graduates that contribute to health information policy formulation, implementation, and ultimately changes towards better health of the population
- To provide students with a graduate education that will further their careers as leaders, problem-solving skills, and innovators in health informatics
- Prepare health informatics professionals with knowledge of the healthcare industry and technology solutions, in conjunction with practical skills needed in the field of health informatics
